Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

How do you choose a therapist? Choosing a Therapist in Minneapolis, MN is a hard decision! There are so many different resources and it can be overwhelming not knowing where to go or what to do. Check out my blog post on tips about How to Find a Therapist in Minneapolis, MN. My hope is this will help guide you to finding a Therapist in Minneapolis, be it a Sex Therapist in Minnesota, Anxiety Counseling, Couples Counseling in Minnesota, or Self-Care Counselor, who is the right fit.

Who do you work with? I welcome individuals 18+ and couples 25+ in therapy. I specialize in Anxiety Counseling, Sex Therapy in Minneapolis, Couples Counseling in Minnesota, and Self-Care Counseling. I specialize in working with LGBTQ+, Trans, and Gender Expansive folks, BDSM/Kinky, and Poly folks in Therapy in Minneapolis. I also am a Private Practice Coach and Holistic Healer in Minneapolis too.

How long do counseling sessions typically last? Sessions last 50 minutes for individual therapy and couples therapy is a minimum of 80 minutes. Had a stressful as fuck week and want more time? I understand some weeks may be more difficult than others! I am happy to be flexible to try and schedule you for an 80 session to provide you with the time best fit! *Please note this is not a guarantee and the sooner you let me know, the easier it is for me to look into this for you.

What happens during the first few counseling sessions? The first couple of sessions are for me to get to know you, understanding your life history, and goals for therapy. From this foundation, we can talk through different strategies and interventions that will help with your hopes. Every 4-8 weeks I ask questions with clients regarding our therapeutic alliance. Every session I check in about what’s gone on since last session! Every 90 days we review your goals in therapy and if anything is to be tailored to your needs.

How often will I need to come to counseling? I am a Therapist in Minneapolis who works to get you to your goals ASAP! I meet with you weekly to build consistency, good habits, and repetition toward positive outcomes. I ask for a 1-year commitment, depending on what you are wanting to focus on in therapy. Everyone’s treatment and services are different in length, depending on your needs. For example, most couples wait 6-7 years before seeing a Sex Therapist in Minneapolis or Couples Counseling in Minnesota, when there are things they are struggling with. It takes time to undo some of those patterns, they weren’t built in a day! My clients recognize better outcomes when we meet weekly, consistently, for one year. They get excited about the progress, reflect on changes, and say weekly appointments are helpful with accountability!

Wait, hold up, did you say your clients see you for a year? Did I read that right? Why yes you did and I’m glad that caught your attention! Mental health is different than physical, there is no magical, bitty boppity boo, sparkly wand to cast a spell of goals will be completed in no time! It takes time and that is okay!!

What is your availability? Rather than worrying about getting into my schedule weekly, I set aside a scheduled time right off the bat, with you weekly, that way it is protected for you - nobody else will be scheduled. My current availability to see clients is Tuesdays and Wednesdays, other days are booked at this time. Since I do protected times, you may have to start therapy at a less than ideal time, and if you are unable to commit to meeting at this time, I want to make sure I refer you out in order to find a therapist with a time you’re looking for. Please note that there is no guarantee of immediate availability and wait lists may apply for me or another provider. Once you are an established client, I will make sure to inform you about any times that may open up and be available before the general public. Don’t worry, you got dibs!!

What if counseling isn't working? Let’s talk about it! I make sure to have conversations about our therapeutic relationship, between the 4-8 week mark to understand if something isn’t working. I ask you how I can help fix it. I implement your feedback and needs to our sessions moving forward, if you still think something isn’t working after giving it a few months after our conversations, I’m happy to devote time to finding a therapist in Minneapolis that you think is a better fit. I definitely want to plan ahead in case we do find a therapist in Minneapolis who is a good fit for you and have some time to plan out what’s best for your care!

What is your cancellation policy? I require a 1 week cancellation policy. This is to reserve your time on my schedule in therapy and having everyone’s, my client’s, your’s and my time respected. If I do not receive a notice and this is a no-showed or late canceled appointment, you are responsible for the cost of that session time. It is your responsibility to prioritize therapy, reach out and let me know if you are needing to cancel an appointment 1 week in advance. This way I can easily open up that time for someone who may need additional time that week or reschedule that week if times become available.

What about the weather and flu season? You’re a Minnesotan thinking ahead alright! Yes, we get what feels like mountains of snow in the winter, have sick kiddos, and family members with the flu. The 1 week rule still applies to these, and we can make sure to have a video or phone session, whichever is easiest, scheduled!

Where are you located and how do sessions take place? Due to COVID-19, I am providing telehealth therapy in Minneapolis only at this time. This can be as accessible for online and telehealth appointments. For our sessions, I ask that you are in a private, confidential setting, and nobody else is around. If you have children, you will need to arrange services for little(s) to be taken care of during our time. I do not do sessions while you are driving, if you are driving during our scheduled appointment time and I call, I will ask that in 5 minutes you pull over and I will give you a call back to start. If you are not pulled over by my second phone call, you will be responsible for payment of your scheduled time and will have to reschedule.

How do I know if you’re my jam? What a fabulous question! I understand how difficult it is to therapist shop and still question whether or not the person is the best fit. You want to make sure it’s the right decision and feel 100% comfortable with that person! Folks who work best with me are firecrackers, sassy-ass personalities, who are ready to do work! These peeps are invested and dedicated to the work. They understand that my style of therapy is not a drive-thru menu of services, where you get your feel-good nuggets and happy meal toys, then peace out and come back when you want immediate relief. My style is helping to build repetition on your goals in order to get you consistency, where you don’t need me anymore, I don’t want you to be in therapy forever!

What can I expect from therapy? What you put in is what you get out. Therapy can be ANYTHING you make it! Want a ritual at the beginning of the session? Good! Let’s figure out what that might be for our time together. I value patience and pacing ourselves in order to create a foundation of small steps towards big changes. I also value flexibility, honesty, humor, and dedication in our sessions. Honesty especially helps me as your therapist in Minnesota to get you the outcomes you deserve during your commitment to therapy. You can expect all of this and more in our work together.

Wait, you said something about me not needing you anymore. Are you breaking up with me before we even started therapy? No, of course not! Just know that I don’t want you to be in therapy forever and that you will graduate from therapy. We will have conversations about this, what this means for you, and naturally, if your goals are met and there’s no work left to be done, then bravo! You have arrived and are ready to graduate with your hard work and successes! I ask you during the time we are winding down and out of therapy, what you appreciated about our work together and set you up with a plan of steps to continue on your own.
