How To Choose The Right Personal Lube For You!

Here are my sex therapist and intimacy coach recommendations when thinking about personal lube, you need to consider the five Ps of lube, purpose, places, pleasure, play, and price. Let's break down these four P's to find the best personal lube for your sexy self-care routine.

1-Purpose: What it’s for, sensation, cooling/warming, etc.

  • What is the purpose of the lube?

  • Is it for sensation? Does it have cooling or warming properties?

  • Is it to enhance any type of particular pleasure?

2-Places: Where it’s being used?

  • Where are the places where the personal lube is being used?

  • Is it primarily for genital stimulation?

  • Is it for all-around body play?

  • Is there something specific in a particular place that the loop is being used sexually?

3-Pleasure: Kinds that you enjoy, taste, flavors, texture, etc.

  • Ask yourself what kind of lubes you enjoy. Is it the taste, the flavor, the texture, the properties, or the feeling of it? Personal lube is pleasurable.

  • Think about the types of lube you’ve used and answer the questions below

  • Did I like this type of lube?

  • What did or didn’t I enjoy about it?

  • Was there a certain type of flavor to it?

  • Did I like the feeling and/or texture of it? Was it too oily or greasy?

  • If I had to rank all the types of lube I’ve tried on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, what would that be?

4-Play: types of sexual activities you’re engaging in

  • Ask yourself what types of sexual activities you are engaging in. It is important to pick a personal lube that will work with various sex toys, positions, and other things you may be experiencing mentoring during sex.

5-Price: How much am I willing to spend on lube?

Ask yourself this question and reflect on it. Think through if there are multiple kinds of lube that you’d like to use, try, or intrigue you. Maybe there are sample packs to order or shop around for and these are some great questions to consider.

***Sex Therapist & Intimacy Coach Jackie’s Favorite Lube Tip: Try Smaller Sample Packs Before You Buy Bottles!!

Honestly, I love testing out different sex toys, personal lubes, and more when it comes to my sexual self care. As a sex therapist and intimacy coach, I know I am going to get this question a lot when it comes to the best type of personal lube. I can’t answer that for you, everyone is different and that’s okay. What I will and can recommend as a sex therapist and intimacy coach is to test out samples before investing too much money on big bottles of personal lube that you don’t end up liking. I’ve linked my favorite sample packs below and here are my page recommendations to check out more products!

Types of Personal Lubricants

1-Water-based: Water-based lubricants help reduce the friction during sexual activity. These kinds of lubricants are mainly composed of water, cellulose - a substance that includes plant cell walls or vegetable fibers - or a glycerin solution - a simple poly compound that derives from animals and plant sources.

It lowers the risk of irritation, can evaporate easily, stick, gummy mess with heat, compatible with contraceptives, beginners start here! *Water-based lube is the safest by far. You can pair this with condoms and sex toys and it will not melt your toys or condoms. Win-win!

2-Oil-based: These range with ingredients from plant-based oils such as sunflower seed oil, sweet almond oil, or coconut oils. Some people will create and make their at-home vegan-based lubes with these types of oils.

This type of lube can be used for anal penetration, cannot use a condom with this because oil breaks down the protection of latex.

3-Silicone-based: Silicone lubricants are made out of what is usually called a dielectric grease that is waterproof and it creates the silicone oil to become thicker, with a jelly-like texture. Most often polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the silicone oil and is thicker than silica.

This type of lube lasts longer than you do. It feels like a sticky, gummy powder on hand. It can combined with an expensive dildo, and when paired with silicone toys, it can ruin, wreck, or melt toys. Can use with any form of protection.

4-Cannabidol-based: Recently, there has been Cannabidiol (CBD) Lube on the Market, mainly in California to help reduce Genito-Pelvic Pain or Discomfort during sex.

Proceed with caution if you decide to use this type of lube or experiment with it. There is not a lot of research on this product or material.

An Additional Note: THC Lube

THC Lube has recently come out on the market with the Delta 8 THC. This is only sold in certain states at this time. I encourage you to do your research before using or buying this product. This is newer on the market, and may not be available in a state near you.

Some personal lube brands this sex therapist and intimacy coach thinks are flame include, Uberlube, Sliquid Organic, and Astroglide have been pretty popular brands for those with sensitive skin. Additional Brands: Lube Life, Shibari, Fuck Water, etc.
